I have had doubts about religion - my specific one being Roman Catholic with quite critical parents - for many years. I’ve read a lot of theology and philosophy, critically digested and integrated diverse opinions and perspectives.I had come to an “I don’t really care†position, was still culturally attached - and then noticed that songs in church or passages from the bible actually appeared “bad†to me, plain wrong, contradicting my values ...Hitchens gets to the heart of this, relentlessly. This book has helped me clarify my thinking around religion in general and my faith in particular.I’m grateful I finally read this and wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who wants to increase their clarity on where they stand when it comes to “godâ€.
"There is no 'Eastern' solution" - I was especially curious about this chapter and it woke me up from I dream I had thought to be safe, after all Buddhism is not a religion like Christianity, isn't it? Maybe Hitchens is right when he writes: "A faith (or a philosophy - as I would say) that despises the mind and the free individual, that preaches submission and resignation, and that regards life as a poor and transient thing, is ill-equipped for self-criticism. Those who become bored by conventional "Bible" religions and seek "enlightenment" by way of dissolution of their own critical faculties into nirvana in any form, had better take a warning. They may think they are leaving the realm of despised materialism, but they are still being asked to put their reason to sleep, and to discard their minds along with their sandals."Maybe it is not such a good idea to desperately want to go beyond reason.As for the main content of the book, I have long suspected monotheistic religion to be dangerous, and Hitchens explains and argues very well why that assumption is a realistic one.
Hitchens, of course, is right: god is not great. Made up, mythological fantasy stories and creature can be great, as proof of human creativity and for sheer entertainment value. Gods don't fall in that category, as less intellectually endowed Homo Not-Really-Sapiens tend to take them seriously - and then it gets really ugly.This is what Hitchens describes in detail and at length in this book. What's truly sad is that there are still people out there, who need such a book to finally do away with their superstitions and free their minds to turn sapient. And even worse is the fact that there are so many who oppose it with harebrained non arguments and violent threats.Religion and the belief in god(s) is, simply put, like an alternative brand of mathematics. While most sapient beings are very confident, that there is enough proof to support the hypothesis that 1+1=2, there remain legions of devout, who believe that 1+1 equals -20 or 7 or 5 or -6 or 99 or +/- infinity or 0 or any other absurd result, to be found in one or the other part of some scripture (claiming mutually exclusive results in the same book). Or worse, they believe in made up results proclaimed by some priest, imam, rabbi, shaman, prophet, or other exploitationist, who clearly has a distinct advantage if the gullible believe him (or occasianaly her).I don't get, why something so absurd needs such an elaborate book to argue against it. Probably because religion conclusively proves one thing: there is no limit to human stupidity (or call it irrationality, when you care to be polite).
Christopher Hitchens bringt viel zur Sprache was viele nicht zusagen wagen. Als überzeugter Atheist kann ich hier nicht behaupten ein 100% unvoreingenommenes Urteil über dieses Buch zu schreiben. Also bitte kein HateMail. Es kann natürlich auch sein, dass ich hier einige Dinge wiederhole die schon von Anderen über das Buch gesagt worden sind.'God is not Great' ist ähnlich dem Buch 'The God Delusion' und 'The End of Faith' lässt aber die Debatte um eine mögliche göttliche Existenz außen vor. Hitchens schreibt ganz vom Anfang an sinngemäß, dass ihm das Glauben von Menschen eigentlich egal ist solange es nicht sein Leben oder das Leben 'Unbescholtener' beeinflusst und baut von dort weg seine gesamte Argumentation, meiner Meinung nach sehr brillant und geistreich auf.Ich kann dieses Buch nur jedem empfehlen, dem das Thema auch nur am Rande interessiert oder auseinandersetzen will.Er ist natürlich sehr zynisch und sarkastisch gerade das macht das Lesen besonders leicht und locker. Für all diejenigen die nicht wirklich gut Englisch können, er verwendet sehr viele für (English as a Second Language) unübliche Ausdrücke an die man sich aber sehr schnell gewöhnt. Für all diejenigen, welche es nicht auf Englisch lesen wollen die Deutsche Fassung ist meiner Meinung nach gut übersetzt. (Fälschlicher weise steht Übersetzung aus dem Amerikanischen obwohl er ja eigentlich ein Englisch pflegt.) Der Herr ist kein Hirte: Wie Religion die Welt vergiftetIch hoffe all denjenigen die sich noch nicht sicher sind ob dieses Buch etwas für sie ist oder nicht eine kleine Entscheidungshilfe gewesen zu sein.
Bevor ich dieses Buch gelesen habe, hatte ich mir viele Debatten von Christopher Hitchens auf Youtube angeschaut. Mir hat seine Art immer sehr gefallen und ich war sehr beeindruckt von seinen literarischen Kenntnissen. Ich konnte das Buch gleich nach den ersten Seiten kaum noch aus der Hand legen, es war viel zu interessant und ich wollte immer mehr wissen und immer mehr erfahren. Der anfangs hart erscheinende Grundton, den der Autor verwendet, erklärt sich von selbst, wenn man mehr und mehr erfährt in wie weit Religion die Menschen zum negativen beeinflusst hat und immer noch beeinflusst. Man fühlt sich geradezu genötigt einen aktiven Atheismus zu leben und dies auch zu verkünden um dem Irrsinn der Religionen Einhalt zu gebieten. Absolut lesenswert. Den einen Stern Abzug gibt es für einige faktische Fehler im Buch, bei denen sich der Autor von seiner persönlichen Überzeugung hat verleiten lassen ein wenig über die Stränge zu schlagen.
